Flip Words Mobile App for iOS Flip Words is a highly successful word game that combines the word making mechanic of Boggle with the phrase completing element of Wheel of Fortune. The name "Flip Words" came from an abstract visual idea that I had about flipping letter tiles. The game board itself is a 7x7 grid of rotating letter tiles that the player uses to form words. The fact that all of the letter and number tiles rotate gives the game relatively inexpensive animations. I designed the interface elements so that they could be moved around and/or scaled to accommodate devices with different dimensions and resolutions. I experimented with muted color pallets during the prototyping phase, but eventually decided that bold primary colors gave the product a bright, simple aesthetic that would make the product's marketing materials instantly recognizable at any size. User feedback supported this notion in side by side comparisons. I was responsible for all of the visual elements of Flip Words which included sketches, wireframes, high-fidelity mock-ups, and the completion of all of the game's art assets (buttons, dialogs, graphics, animations and marketing materials). All artwork for Flip Words was created using Adobe Photoshop and Autodesk Maya.
Flip Words iPhone Screens
The title screen for the iPhone version remained unchanged for the most part, But the play screen underwent fairly significant changes. All of the player feedback information needed to be moved to the left of the letter grid to accomodate the larger button and icon sizes and the letter grid itself needed to lose two rows and one column so that the touch points would be more accurate. The total number of letter tiles in the phrase box also had to be reduced to maintain legibility.
